About the Position:
The goal of MTSS/PBIS and Mediation Support Specialist is to help a school become a more healthy, positive, and safe learning environment by empowering students to manage conflict, transform relationships and enhance school climate. Program objectives can include: mediation/peer-mediation, reducing the rates of office referrals, suspensions and/or expulsions; creating a stronger sense of community by bridging differences; and instilling valuable, lifelong skills that prepare students to become productive citizens.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Intervention
- Develop, document, and maintain ongoing intervention plans
- Provide tiered interventions that will be progress-monitored over a period of time
- Utilize multiple service delivery methods and research-based interventions
- Maintain and update the database that identifies students to receive MTSS support and the results of the interventions provided
- Work with building teams to support the implementation of PBIS
- Meet/report progress to parents, school teams and district teams when appropriate
- Provide supplemental instruction (one-on-one, in small groups)
- Provide targeted supports after-school for targeted support
- Assist with School wide PBIS and implementation/collection of data
- Provide Direct Tier 1 and 2 support for targeted students and data
- Participate in on-going, targeted professional development training
- Mediation
- Assist in processing mediation requests/referrals; scheduling mediations, coordinating and conducting mediation sessions, monitoring agreements, maintaining records, and issuing reports on services provided.
- Assist in creating and delivering presentations regarding mediation and the conflict mediation program.
- Provide individual and small group services relative to mediation issues of clients.
- Serve as a resource for Chelsea Public Schools crisis situations and help coordinate professional mediator response as required.
- Support 6-12 mediation initiatives, and oversee mediation programming at CPS.
- Development of Peer Mediation Program
- Recruit students to be mediators;
- Select the student mediators;
- Organize and participate in student training sessions (arrange for outside trainers or do the training with help from others);
- Set up a roster of mediators so that the program works efficiently;
- Establish a referral process and monitor the selection of appropriate cases for mediation;
- Set up regular meetings of the student mediators to bring the group together, support their
- efforts, review their progress and do training updates;
- Observe student mediators in their first few mediation sessions to ensure they are capable of carrying on the process on their own;
- Help students mediate when they are having difficulty (this should be done only when absolutely necessary);
- Debrief mediators after each case;
- Manage the record keeping of mediation cases;
- Work with student mediators to address any program challenges;
- Maintain communication with school administration about program progress;
- Act as spokesperson for the program within the school and wider community.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree minimum required and 2 years of experience, master’s degree preferred
- A minimum of 3 years in an urban public school or charter school
- Demonstrated knowledge, experience and success with:
- PBIS
- Behavioral strategies for struggling students
- Tracking and analyzing student data
- Planning and implementing lessons based on assessment and the needs and abilities of students
- Speaking clearly and concisely in written and oral communication
- Tier 1, 2 and 3 training in Restorative Circles preferred, but not required
- Bilingualism in Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred, but not required
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required
Qualifications Preferred:
Salary: Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Terms: This is a full time position (40 hours/week). Hours will be established upon hire. This is a non-bargaining unit position and is eligible for benefits. Salary will be determined by work experience and education level.
